Downpatrick Racecourse is the Oldest Racecourse in Ireland with racing first taking place over 330 years ago in 1685 at the old course, a few miles down the road from where it is situated today. Racing has taken place at the current course for more than 150 years. The racecourse is instantly recognisable with its undulations and a renowned uphill climb to the finishing line. A tight right-handed course, Downpatrick is one of three racecourses that only stages National hunt (jump) racing. The racecourse is situated one mile from the centre of the historic town of Downpatrick which is synonymous with the burial ground of St Patrick.
Racing takes place from March to October. The feature race is the Randox Ulster National which takes place in March and is a recognised trial for the Irish Grand National.
Downpatrick has a reputation of being one of the friendliest racecourses with themed racedays such as Ladies Day and Family Day adding to the lively atmosphere.
