Regardless of the weather, it is a rarity to see Thurles Racecourse losing a race meeting, even in the depths of winter when many of the track’s meetings take place. Jokingly and affectionately referred to as “Ireland’s first all-weather racecourse”, Thurles is the only privately-owned track in the country and is located only a few kilometres from the town centre. It is a right handed track of one and a quarter miles and hosts a number of top-class Flat and National Hunt (jumps) meetings including the Grade 2 Kinloch Brae Chase and the Grade 2 Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle.
